From Mari DeSchriver: Crawlspaces and Moisture

Your home may or may not have a crawlspace; a dark, slightly creepy underground space that is part of a home’s foundation. If you do have one, you might consider installing a dehumidifier in the space to avoid all kinds of grossness and potential damage to your home.

Although crawlspaces are pretty much useless, they are an important structural component of your home. Excess moisture in your crawlspace, however, can lead to wood rot, which is a serious issue because many flooring systems are made of wood. If wood is rotting, it can cause the floor of your home to sag. Pests, such as termites, are attracted to moisture and wood, further endangering the structural solidity of your home.

A damp crawlspace is just gross. Mold, dust, pests, and mildew thrive in dark, wet places and you do not want to invite them into your crawlspace. A mold party can endanger you and your loved one’s health, especially if they are prone to allergies or other respiratory conditions.

When your crawlspace’s humidity levels are not maintained by a dehumidifier, your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are compensating for the high moisture in your home and are having to working harder, leading to higher utility bills and a better chance of system breakdown. A dehumidifier releases this stress and keeps the air at the ideal moisture levels.

It is common to have other moisture control methods like a sump pump in crawlspaces, but most of the times they just don’t cut it. Sump pumps keep standing water out, but do not address moisture in the air and earth below.

GeneralAire® Wi-Fi Controlled Whole-House Dehumidifiers reduce excess moisture to keep your crawlspace dry and pest-free. Not only are they efficient and reliable, but you can control them from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi connection right from your phone or smart device! That means you don’t have crawl down to that unpleasant crawlspace since you can check or alter the humidity levels right from the couch. Check out the link below to learn more!
