Home Heating Oil Filter Maintenance and The Environment

You’ve heard about how major spills, such as the Deepwater Horizon or the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has killed thousands of marine animals, has taken years to clean up and will take even more years from which to rebound.
Home Heating Oil Filter Maintenance and The Environment - Stay in touch with generalaire by reading the latest news, announcements and articles with general filters - 2A_700B_Box_Filter_LR_240x180__1_

A residential oil spill can cause a great deal of damage to the inhabitants, pets, surrounding nature and the home itself.  Today oil spills are taken very seriously; regardless of the source, the place, or the size of the spill.  Oil must be thoroughly cleaned from every surface it touches; even if it means digging up a home, digging enormous holes under the house or in the basement, or taking the house down entirely.  The expense and litigation can take years and upwards of a million dollars to rectify.

It’s not just the oil spill itself that can hurt. News that a contractor didn’t do the job correctly can damage one's business reputation. Insurance rates can double, or more after a claim. The stress of going through the cleanup, litigation, cost, increased insurance rates, and damage to one’s reputation can be overwhelming to all concerned.

Following is the recommended maintenance schedule.

EVERY YEAR:

  • Change the filter
    • Traditional
      • Replace the filter and all gaskets
      • Clean the oil can thoroughly to inspect the can for damage, imperfections, non-epoxy coated cans, or leaks.  Replace immediately if found.
    • Spin-on
      • Replace the whole filter
  • Check the entire system for signs of damage or leaks

EVERY 10 YEARS:

  • Replace the entire oil cartridge
  • Replace the oil tank

IT IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TECHNICIAN TO ENSURE THAT ANY NEW PARTS HAVE BEEN PROPERLY INSTALLED, AND THAT THERE IS NO LEAKAGE.
